Deli-cioso Review: The San Marcos Food Blog

I got a chance to hang out and ask some questions with the Chef/Owners of Deli-cioso, they give some background about the restaurant and themselves and also give some recommendations for first time diners. here is the video:

enjoy!

[Excuse camera work heh]

I’ll have to remember to trust cravings.

yeah

Let me explain: a couple weeks ago I was really craving some “Broccoli Cheese Soup”, and to be honest, the local choices I was aware of did not excite me in the slightest. I was looking for something new, but also something that was homemade and fresh. So I searched around for new restaurants in the area. To my surprise and delight, I came upon the name “Deli-cioso”. The description was interesting.

The “Build Your Own” Breakfast Burrito

“Deli-cioso a restaurant focused on freshness, quality, and creativity. The style of food they create is a great mix of Tex-Mex street tacos, breakfast tacos, torta sandwiches, soups, salads, and a whole lot more”

Blackened Fish Taco

So the next afternoon, I decided to stop by for lunch.
I ordered some fish tacos and a bowl of the Jalapeño broccoli cheese(both turning out to be my favorites). I will review each of these items in more detail in a little bit, but suffice it to say that I was very very impressed. The two chefs who run it left a very good first impression as nice, warm people who could make some really good food. This is actually the place that inspired me to start this blog because everyone I knew had no idea that this place and others like it existed.. so that led me to think of a way to make sure people knew the good restaurants in San Marcos.

Deli-cioso is located in the alcove at 700 N. LBJ, right in the middle of the Texas State University campus in San Marcos, Texas.

I must add, It is definitely a convenient central location for students or locals to get a quick breakfast or lunch. This restaurant is geared more toward these meals but they are now serving several dinner options with the hours being Monday-Thursday: 7:00am-8:00pm and Friday and Saturday: 8:00am-4:00pm.

They serve breakfast until 4:00 pm and lunch all day, allowing diners to create their own breakfast tacos or burritos, as well as having quite an extensive lunch menu of items to choose from. Their breakfast tacos are able to contend with and beat many of the long time tex-mex places around, and with their carrot-habañero and creamy serrano salsas, its pretty much no contest. Their “Build Your Own” Breakfast Burrito is so good because they offer a ton of different delicious things to choose from. Everything is made fresh except for the tortillas and bread and they have some very novel ideas for tacos as well as some amazing, fresh soup.

Fresh Tortilla Soup

There are many options for vegan, vegetarian, and pescetarian diners as well. They include on their menu a “Fried Avocado Taco” which is great. The avocado is crunchy on the outside and soft on on the inside. I have never seen anything like it before. They also have several different freshly-made salsas available. These guys really know food. Further, variety is a big part of what this place has to offer for diners. Their prices are very appealing with things like $2.25 tacos, or three tacos and a drink for $7.00. They also offer other sides besides french fries, like beans and chips. Many diners will find these options very appealing. Their Refried and Black beans are the best in San Marcos.

Few restaurants in the San Marcos area can boast the variety and creativity of Deli-cioso’s menu. Chefs and owners, Rene Palomarez and Adam Gronski have a life-time of experience in the culinary world. Being introduced to the art of food at very early ages, they have spent many years cultivating a skill and sense for food that clearly comes out in their menu and, more importantly, the exemplary and consistent execution of that menu. Admittedly, I have been going several times a week and cannot get enough. A great thing about this place is that they have a ton of different things: soups, tacos, sandwiches, tortas, Breakfast Burritos, several sides. As it is plain to see, they boast quite an approachable menu.

The Fish Tacos are my personal favorite. They feature fried or blackened Tilapia with Escabeche( a very tasty Tex-Mex, Jalapeño-Carrot relish-type side) and an amazingly balanced Chipotle Mayo. I was very impressed with how fresh everything tasted, and how simultaneously, all the individual items in the taco could stand on their own, yet also complimented each other very well. This is a rare, but great thing.

My other favorite would have to be the Jalapeño Broccoli Cheese Soup. With such a good soup already, these guys have made it that much better by giving it a nice bite with the addition of Jalapeño. It is extremely delicious..

If you are in the San Marcos area, I cannot recommend enough that you come to Deli-cioso for a homemade, wholesome breakfast or lunch. All I can say is that this place is named appropriately. Great for take-out or dining in.

This is the restaurant that made me want to write about San Marcos Restaurants and get them more business. This was my first review and I have reposted it and added just a bit more pictures and commentary.
